Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, James Paterson grew up in the Kensington Market neighborhood of Toronto, Ontario. He received his BFA (honors) from the University of Waterloo, and taught art at the elementary and high school level before leaving teaching to pursue art full time in 1989. Paterson likes to approach his art with a simple sense of wonder, his aim being to create art that is redemptive, revealing the reality of God in the world in such a manner as to give expression to mystery. He likes to use materials in a simple way, often incorporating moving parts that viewers can play with. Paterson and his wife, Lynn, currently live and make art near Meaford, Ontario, on the shores of Georgian Bay.
Here are a few examples of his work.
